You can't beat the simplicity and universality of the plain ol' telephone. I'd hazard a guess that most people in developed countries learned to use one at such a young age that they don't even remember doing so.

Having said that, I think computer telephone stations would actually be an improvement if you used them with quality headsets. Most people I know work and play in front of a computer.

Soft phones won't/shouldn't replace normal desk phones, imo.
