For bigger setups I agree with you, but consider this scenario: I am in a hotel or at a friend's place without my laptop. I download an IAX client or I posess a hardware IAX phone that I carry around with me. I'd like to connect to my * and place/ receive calls, and would like to do that securly. Most likely I will not have permission (nor time) to configure a VPN, FreeSWAN etc etc. That's where I truly long for encryption support. You'd anyway be able to turn that off on the * side for your large infrastructure scenario. Sounds convincing?
