Any sort of wireless handset. For the price of the Plantronics units you can buy WiFi SIP phones or any sort of wireless solution. They sell mini cordless phones for around $100 and a good ATA doesn't cost too much more than $60. Also the Aastra 480i-CT or Uniden UIP1868. With the Uniden you can buy a cordless extension that has bluetooth and use bluetooth headsets, however it supports only one line. If I am not mistaken the Aastra each wireless phone connected to it can have its own call going on. If you need to cover a very large area WiFi is a better solution since you can keep on adding access points for seamless coverage.

Besides what I've suggested above and Plantronics headsets, the only other solution is SpectaLink, and their newer solution actually runs over WiFI, Link WTS you'd have to connect to Asterisk via analog lines and for some reason they don't support caller id in that configuration.

What are these other, more elegant complete solutions you are talking about?
