They're specified on the smsq command, e.g.:

smsq --concurrent=3 --mo --motx-channel='mISDN/2/0900900941' 
--motx-callerid=0434439000
079nnnnnnn 'testing 1234567890'

Oh.  Then the confusion is clearly on my part. 
I got most of the config from
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Asterisk+cmd+Sms

If I don't need the SMS application, can you tell me what I need to do,
or where I need to look? 

Thanks for helping with this - it doesn't seem like sending SMS over
Asterisk is much used.
