For all their customer service failings at the call centre end, once you do get an engineer, it's very rare to get a bad one. Many of them have been in the job for decades and, at a guess, probably have civil service pensions to look forward to from the pre-privatisation days, so they're far more willing to go the extra mile to be helpful than the paid-by-the-hour folks with very little training some companies send out.
