What's your iax.conf? For me modem configuration looks like this: [iaxmodem5] type=friend host=dynamic secret=xxxxx context=fax permit=127.0.0.1 allow=all P.S. after editing inittab, you also have to execute # kill -HUP 1 So that init process re-reads configuration.
