The question might as well be "Why are they so close
to roman miles ?". As I understand it , it's a complete
coincidence that one minute of arc at the equator happens
to be very close to one statute mile.

e.g. the French or Canadians aren't tugging their
collective beards wondering why a nautical kilometer
is slightly longer than a regular one.
