Oh!  A hash KEY as in a hash/pound character ('#')!  A BUTTON!

And here I was spinning my head around trying to figure out what sort of 
hash algorithm is involved here, and what could be special about an 
extension whose name serves as a key into some sort of nearly-O(1) 
association and/or mapping scheme.
