You could validate whether it has a physical connection I believe. Add qualify=yes in the sip definition and use something like:
/usr/sbin/asterisk -rx "sip show peer XXXX" | grep "UNREACHABLE" | wc -l Where XXXX is the name of the sip definition on your system. If the return is 0 then all is well, if the return is 1 then you have a connection issue. Not sure how to do any other type of validation, but no doubt it's possible.
