I use wav49. It is compatible with Windows and Linux at least. Don't know about Mac though. I used to use gsm - but only some apps play it on Linux - and I could only find QuickTime Player to play it in Windows. Simple 'wav' appears to be incompatible (at least not directly) with Windows.
