Geostationary satellites have been used for telephone for ages (and are still used for remote areas - they have advantages over the disintegrating constellations such as iridium - namely predictability). As for consumer (home) grade satellite internet service, it's pretty low quality. But if you have money, you can have just as good of service as the telcos enjoy for TDM voice over them (even with VoIP). I know several organizations using them (but they are paying more than the $100 or so a month as is typical for a home user - a lot more).
