Also, google "Asterisk cookbook" for good dialplan snippets. Start simple and keep it that way. My "dialplan trick" is to try to do the dialplan in many small contexts. This helps to not get too lost. Z. is fond on the new AEL syntax which isn't really covered in the O'Reilly book, but it is easier than coding each line of dialplan by hand.
