It's a common myth, but it's never really been true, even in the days of big shared Ethernet segments. On a modern switched network, you should really be able to get over 95% of the nominal bandwidth, although I wouldn't want to run VoIP that close to the edge without a lot of QoS tuning.


As for the original topic--it's getting hard to find good 100baseT cards these days--I used to buy Intel EtherExpress Pro cards, but they're hard to find. I've had good luck with Intel's GigE cards, and they're only $50 or so. That's not exactly cheap, but they seem to work well with Linux. Most 3com cards are okay, too, but I've had better luck with Intel.
