The resolution for the problem was to modify utils/Makefile
with this line
_ASTCFLAGS+=-DSTANDALONE -fPIC
Instead of
_ASTCFLAGS+=-DSTANDALONE
Still doesn't resolve the fact that sqlite3 version 3.2.8 doesn't like the
create table if not exists astdb, but I can live with that.
