Jeb, thanks for taking the time to reply - i could have easily killed days looking for this!
It's working fine now, but indeed, my mileage may vary ... which brings up the question; What is the reason FAX_DETECT is not recommended in Stable?
No idea? The number of people using it seems pretty small (compared to all * use), so if they were having problems, if would make sense to change the default.
But really I have no idea -- and it is working great for me!
