I'm not sure what you mean by a 'plain vanilla' kernel. I installed Mandrake 9.2 and then got the latest Kernel for that release from the support site(s). So I believe I'm running the 'standard-off-the-shelf' kernel for Mandrake 9.2, is that what you mean? Or are you implying I should custom compile a kernel stripping out all the 'unneeded' stuff, assuming I can determine 'unneeded'?
