Claus: One difference is that I'm using the slower ATA disk, not the SCSI. Is the noise rhythmic (periodic) or constant? If periodic, what is the time between noise bursts? Do you hear the noise throughout a call, or just occasionally?

The sound is just like hearing a disk just muffled (sounds like strange static).. If you have a number I can call you at then you can hear it yourself.
