My understanding from the 'expert' is the PCI issues have something
to do with a poor PCI chip design on the motherboard. The folks that
are heavy into audio apps tend to swap out their VIA motherboards. Guess that implies there aren't any workarounds.
From the Ardour (Linux Audio Editor) System requirements:
Avoid VIA motherboards and chipsets wherever possible. This company has demonstrated an almost complete disregard for reasonable use of the PCI bus. Their hardware has repeatedly been implicated in a failure to achieve low latency performance. Here is one example of the kinds of problems you can expect.
