This could happen if the wo devices negotiate a direct connection. IAX has a mechanism to do this just like REINVITE in SIP. Once the call is setup * connects the two end points directly and takes itself out of the call path. This happens as long as * is not required to transcode between codecs or protocols. Also, there is a parameter for IAX.CONF called NOTRANSFER= that can user enable/disable such things on a per peer basis.
