I think it's cheaper (and more efficient) for the telco's to provide a large bank of batteries to provide the -48 volt power used in a lot of their equipment and services, rather than use a typical inverter system to convert battery DC voltage to AC. I've been in rooms where there is a complete wall with dozens of very large batteries - enough I imagine to run the CO for hours (maybe days).

Yes, you can buy giant PBX switches from the major vendors with -48 DC power supplies instead of AC.

The reason for an asterisk system to be able to work from -48v is really only if the end-user customer requires it as part of a spec. - I would think only a minority of sites would require this though. These days, most equipment rooms I've been in can supply lots of backed-up AC.

so the switches, etc have two power interfaces? one for the -48dc and
the other for the AC plug? or you must specifically buy -48vdc
equipment?

besides being used by telcos....any other advantage? power saving? noise?

-48m volt power is often used in telco central office environments,
where the C.O. provides a huge amount of battery-backed up power to the
switches and to power the local loops in the event of an AC power failure.

This question is for my own knowledge....i have no experience on this
"electrical" area.
why do you want to run -48vdc equipment? what's the advantage of doing that?

What server hardware would you recommend for an Asterisk system which are
really critical?
The additional hardware will probably be two digium TE110P cards, and an Adit
600 platform.

If it's possible to run on -48VDC, It would be great!

Are there any experiences with any HP or FujitsuSiemens systems? Or other "complete
server" systems?

Thanks!
