I too had a hard time with email notfications. I knew that the * box needed a smtp sever. I belive @home has send mail installed so you just need to add a smart host. Sendmail.org has infomation on setting that all up.
Also try copying the correct /usr/share/zoneinfo file to /etc/localtime that should clear up any problems.
