Many extensions have an install-time option to install in the user's
profile. This allows you to install in a place you can write to.

On RH, Mandrake and Fedora (that have pam_xauth):

  su -c firefox -

On Debian and SuSE:

  sux -c firefox -

Everywhere:

  su -c "DISPLAY=$DISPLAY XAUTHORITY=$HOME/Xauthority firefox" -

Or, the bad old way:

  xhost + localhost
  su -
  # in the su shell:
  DISPLAY=:0 firefox
