You should good for a better explanation, but here's the gist: 1. Free memory is wasted memory. You paid for it so obviously it should be used. Modern operating systems turn your "free" memory into disk cache. So the actual amount of memory available is the combination of free, buffers and cache.
2. Secondly, asterisk uses threads, so all of those processes are using the same address space and have the same amount of memory. Due to memory being shared in various ways, the values in top will likely never add up to anything resembling your actual memory...
