Have you looked at the MailboxExists app?
What you want could be done quite easily. The following is from
memory, but it should be close enough:
exten => _14XXX,1,MailboxExists([EMAIL PROTECTED])
exten => _14XXX,2,Here goes the stuff if there's no mailbox
exten => _14XXX,102,Voicemail(u${EXTEN})
