Some ATAs define # >as the "send" key when dialing. Thanks both of you. The asterisk dialplan was my first guess. Simplified it to try to eliminate that possibility, but still wasn't sure I had done it right. Didn't help. Ran tcpdump and discovered it was about 8 seconds before the ATA sent anything to asterisk. Then I read the second suggestion. Tried #, and the phone rang almost immediately.
