No matter what, Asterisk does nothing when you press "*". It does not interrupt the OGM and it certainly does not return to the "a" context.
Watching the console there is no indication of any key press.

Is there an undocumented setting in asterisk someplace which enables this feature?
Have you tried to set dtmf to rfc2833???
