We are using what came with the phones...if I understand this well, there are two versions. One is the actual firmware, which I think is 1.3.1, and the other is the BootROM? That would be 2.5.0.

I was planning on updating the firmware anyway this weekend when the guys actually configuring the system come in, but wanted to make sure everything on my side was running smoothly so that we would waste less valuable weekend time.

One more thing, woud bootp support have anything to do with it? Cisco PIX supports DHCP but not BOOTP (it will not respond to BOOTP queries according to Cisco http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/ iaabu/pix/pix_62/config/pixclnt.htm). I see a whole bunch of references to BOOTP but the Polycom manuals are somewhat superficial in the network related stuff so that one is not able to draw any conclusions from it.

Hi Eduardo,

You can reboot the phone by holding down +/-/Hold/Messages buttons.

I'm not sure I know the problem with dhcp, it's definitely odd. Can you tell me what firmware you are running?

Hi everyone,

I’m very new to all this, so please forgive me if I have the terminology mixed-up.

We are preparing to install an Asterisk IP PBX over the weekend and I have an issue with the Polycom SP 500 phones we are trying to use. My problem is regarding DHCP.

Our DHCP server is our Cisco PIX 501 firewall. I’ve specified option 66 and the phones connect to the FTP server when they boot. BUT, after they’ve loaded sip.ln, a message comes up stating that the phone could not get an IP address from the DHCP server. There’s an about button right there, and it says it has an address, which is also ping-able. The phone then waits a little and reboots again.

Switching to a fixed IP makes the phone boot all the way. I tried putting together a quick test network with a DHCP server on a BSD machine (using bootpd) and at least I got to the welcome screen (then the phone hanged and the reboot keystroke did not work)….but I think that last thing is just an issue with everything else not being setup on the phone itself.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Also, I unpacked a phone, played with it for a minute and now that phone does not seem to boot. Tried the 4 6 8 * combination for about 10 secs and did not do anything….is there a harder reset than that?
