Ok. I recompiled the kernel with CITT support.

After rebooting, I do:
# modprobe zaptel
# dmesg | tail

Zapata Telephony Interface Registered on major 196

Then, I do:
# modprobe ztdummy

FATAL: Error inserting ztdummy (/lib/modules/2.6.11-gentoo-r9/misc/ ztdummy.ko): No such device

# dmesg | tail

Span already appears to be registered

Hi.

Agree with the above, you probably need the crc_citt module. Modules should be loaded before starting zaptel. Use ztcfg -v to get specific error messages. If your using this in a production environment I suggest buying a card from digium to use as a timer, I tried using ztdummy but Meetme is totally out of sync after 10 minutes.

I installed Asterisk on Gentoo using emerge. At first, emerge tried installing version 0.9 but reading the wiki showed how to get the latest stable. I'm running Gentoo kernel 2.6.11-gentoo-r9.

Asterisk seems to be working just fine, but I'm concerned that since I don't have any Digium hardware, I may need a timer source. When I executed emerge zaptel, it installed zaptel 1.0.7 as well. The problem is that I can't seem to be able to load ztdummy or any zaptel module.

When I type modprobe ztdummy, I get:

# modprobe ztdummy

Can anyone help me? Do I really need or is it recommended to get a timer? I do need to be able to play MOH as well as have several MeetMe rooms. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Could it be something that I need to compile into the kernel (may be I disabled a feature)? Could it be a setting in /etc/make.conf? I'm relatively new to Gentoo so I don't have much experience to tell me if it's a distribution issue
or an asterisk/zaptel issue.

Thanks,
Waldo

Also running Asterisk 1.0.7, currently on kernel 2.6.11-Gentoo-r6
The dmesg output suggests that zaptel wants the crc-ccitt module to be
loaded.
You need to ensure that your kernel build includes this module and that
it is loaded.
