Got some proof of that?  It's generally regarded as common knowlege in these 
circles that the via processors claim 686 compatibility but lack some 
686-specific instructions (CMPXCHG among them), and this is what causes the 
trouble.  GCC says "686 instructions, ok." and the Via throws a fit (SIGILL) 
when seeing the ones it doesn't support.
