Just a note to follow up my post and that from the other Ian - my
offering allowed direct access
to outgoing but only for a fixed (and local) number. Ian S' offering
allowed you to dial out, but
required authentication. Just like to remind you (and anybody reading
this in the archives later) of
one really important point that is written down several places but can
not be repeated too many times:
Never, ever allow un-authenticated outbound dialing from an incoming
context.
If you don't yet understand how to avoid doing this, please please do
not connect your *
installation to the internet; you are not ready for prime time.
You will get a very, very painful case of "sticker shock" if you do,
when some yahoo finds
it and calls her friend on the other side of the globe to discuss
relationships at length --
on your nickel.
Remember, you are always responsible (i.e., on the hook for $$) for
whatever your
telephone system actually does, not just what you wanted it to do.
