Bruce,

The most famously simple way to get Asterisk going is to download Asterisk
at Home, burn it to a CD, and boot a spare PC from it (warning - this will
erase whatever is on that system, so don't do it on any production system).

That is not what I recommend, because you will not learn Asterisk that way.

The simple fact is that Linux is something you will need to learn to some
degree if you really want to be able to understand Asterisk. This does not
need to be daunting; Linux is actually quite user friendly, believe it or
not (it is a labour of love, and the more you look into it, the more it
makes you smile). The thing is that it is so feature-rich there's simply
tons to learn.

One of my favourite books to recommend to Linux newbies is O'Reilly's
Running Linux. That book has been around since for ever (I have a 1st
edition from 1996), and they just recently released the 5th edition. It
teaches Linux the way you need to learn it: from the ground up. It shocks me
how many Linux books nowadays teach Linux as a different flavour of Windows,
and only get into the shell as a kind of utility. This is wrong. Linux has
nothing to do with the X Windowing System, and Running Linux teaches you
this.

Anyhow, the point I'm trying to get across is that Linux is easier to learn
than you might think, and having learned it, Asterisk will become much
friendlier and accesible to you.

Regards,

Jim.
