Thanks everyone, this is much more straight forward than I thought.

Hi all, does anyone know how to have two numbers for one extension?
I have a reception phone as Ext 100 but I also want people to be
able to
dial "0" and have it ring the same phone
Sure, just setup the phone in sip.conf to register as 100 then create
an extension in extensions.conf like (very very simplified):
exten => 100,1,dial(sip/100)
exten => 100,2,hangup
exten => 0,1,noop(comment- dialing the operator)
exten => 0,2,dial(sip/100)
That will do it.
If you're using asterisk at home. I think that there's a digital
receptionist area in FreePBX where you choose from some radio buttons
and drop downs exactly how you want to handle calls to the receptionist.
Let me know if you need further info.
