[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# man smartd

smartd - SMART Disk Monitoring Daemon

smartd can be configured at start-up using the configuration file
/etc/smartd.conf

If you comment out all the drives listed in /etc/smartd.conf then
smartd will just start (no 15 min wait). Comment with # at start of
line.

smartd Is useful because it will send SMART errors to your /var/log/messages

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Monitoring,_Analysis,_and_Reporting_Technology

You can always use smartctl from your CLI.

If smartd is taking 15 min to start you might want to check on your
drives using smartctl or by checking your logs (/var/logs). You may
have a dying hard-drive.
