Another possibility is that the remote maybe also using *, it is 
possible perhaps their menu isn't being played in the background 
(Play instead of Background), that way your digits are of no use 
until the 'Play' finishes

That could be a timing issue, if you don't have a TDM card, then it 
uses a pseudo timing source, which in turn may use the USB 
timer
