This is a matter of personal preferrence. The external devices (commonly called "gateways") are available from a number of companies including Sipura, Mediatrix, Grandstream, Multi-Tech, Linksys (which bought Sipura), etc. You are correct, being external makes replacement and modification easier. In all but the smallest installations the number of little boxes gets out of hand quickly as you add power supplies, power bars and switches. The Sipura's work quite well. For what it's worth the Digium cards you allude to have not been the "gold standard" for internal interfaces either depending on conditions (certain motherboards, IRQ's & (on analog) echo issues only on particlular telco lines). However, to get you started an external Sipra adapter is an excellent choice at a very good price point. This will allow you to get comfortable with the technology as a whole allowing you to better evaluate the other products if the time comes you need to make a move. Hope this helps. David Cook
