Then you could do
        echo sip show peers | asterisk -r | grep -v OK

What's the benefit of that over this?

asterisk -rx "sip show peers" | grep -v OK

The fact that I can remember things with echo whereas I can't always 
remember the other forms :-)   And, that fact that things "should just
work" consistently.
