This is interesting topic for me as well. And been user of SPA3102 and
SPA3000 (not the high end gateways though) I've discovered that they are
not supporting call progress indications (i.e. your phone will never
show something like "Ringing" if you are calling PSTN line - it will
display "Connected" even if there ringing tones on the line and same
goes to busy - it won't show "Busy" - just silently disconnects without
giving up reason) and "Flash" function - thus no use of call waiting (it
does not decode Visual call waiting too). That is why I want to repeat
your question with attention to mentioned details. And yes - echo thing
is also important.
