Has anyone so far used Linksys ATAs such as Linksys RT31P2 for large number
of users?

I can comment on the RT31P2 because we use them for some of our
residential customers (not sure if we're deploying them anymore, but
I've got one here, and it seems to work fine when I was using it --
other than the fact you can't change the response timeout, and either
have to way about 6 seconds for your call to start dialing, or you
have to his #).

PRI will be used for termination/origination and the users will have
internet and phone connected to asterisk server through Linksys ATAs.

Is this a large number of ATAs to be connected to a server? Would it be
better to use something like Tenor gateways? Are there any better gateways
out there that can be used for this purpose?

For something like a Soekris box....yes, for something like Dual
Quad-Core system... no :)

Depends how much transcoding / media processing you plan to do. If you
were just running OpenSER, then the Soekris probably would be fine to
handle that many calls.

By the way, users will be residential but they don't make use of the system
a lot and like to use cellphones more often (even when at home).

The number of registrations won't really matter. It'll be the number
of simultaneous calls you have to handle, the amount of transcoding
you're doing, and the amount of disk access you need to handle (you
can get a significant more number of calls from Asterisk if you use a
RAMdisk)
