I think that to be fair, Polycom's configuration files are intended for a different audience than our average TAUG user.
For many of the people borrowing a phone, Asterisk is a hobby or side interest and this is one of their first hard phones. Polycom's intended audience is really the enterprise users. For an enterprise customer, some investment in understanding the complexity of the config files can pay off down the road with the impressive flexibility they offer. I haven't looked at their web interface in a couple of years so I'd be reluctant to comment on that. I think Elliott has a very constructive suggestion WRT a configurator that produced a set of files. Another alternative would be a console app (bash, python, php) that basically asked a series of questions (location of TFTP directory, Asterisk server address, SIP username, SIP Secret, etc) and spit out the files and set their permissions to something fairly compatible. Maybe we could include a 1 page set of basic instructions to get people started? Is that redundant when one considers the Wiki? Dave On 5/3/07, Simon P. Ditner <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Hi all, Reza commented the other day that no one seems to be interested in borrowing the Polycom phones because they were too difficult to configure, so I was wondering if this is the case, and if perhaps people had feedback about them that they would like passed on to Polycom... Send me your comments and gripes, and I'll forward them on to our rep.
