I don't have a solution to the problem but I might be able to shed some light 
on why the remote Asterisk box doesn't change the situation.  Maybe the remote 
Asterisk box is re-inviting both your box and his phone.  IE The behaviour is 
the same because the audio path is the same.  To really test the remote 
Asterisk box the way you want, make sure that you specify canreinvite=no ( 
link)==> Interesting enough, both [general] and peer in the SIP.conf have 
canreinvite=no
Just a thought: Is your subnet the same as your friend's? (IE are they both 
192.168.1.0/24)  If so, maybe the phones think that they're on the same subnet 
and that causes them to skip their NAT traversal routines. ==> This sounds like 
to be the problem; we're both using 192.168.2.x.       Let me check this out 
and see how I could change one network subnet....
I know it's not a solution but maybe it helps you think of something.  Let us 
know what you find out.Dave
