Eloquently said, Henry. Personally, I have some concerns with some of the direction that I see the trixbox project heading but, overall, it is a complete system with a decent GUI, sufficient for most small to medium sized customers. And it is very straightforward to still add custom dial plan code. Of course, alternatives will be interesting to see grow.
As a Linux command line guy, I find it unusual how much I like the whole trixbox bundle. Loading debian/centos/whatever and then adding asterisk and a bunch of other apps and finally configuring everything by hand has its appeal to my pure techie side for sure. But, mostly, I think many on the list want to deliver solutions not configurations. Whereas others are most interested in the down and dirty, I-know-every-config-line-like-the-back-of-my-hand approach. It is good to see both points of view represented on this list. In my opinion, it is the same idea as compiling source code from hand or simply installing a pre-compiled binary. After a few years, most sysadmins I know would rather install the package after building sufficient trust in the package maintainers. Especially if you're not the only person to maintain the system, either now or in the future. I have tried using AsteriskNow (twice) but I never was able to get it running properly. Also, there is very little action on the AsteriskNow lists so there is really no place to get any help. As for teaching me to code the configuration files this would be not be practical as my tech and I maintain 4 business systems with multiple IVR's, tenants, etc. Anyway, Trixbox works...It could be better but it covers 99% of the functionality required by my clients.
