I've described a trunk as a channel or channels that is many-to-many (as in the 
number of end-points that can be reached) unlike an extension which is a 
channel from one-to-many.

It's a functional description of a channel between switches, like Jim stated.

In modern parlance, a trunk is one or more communication channels.
A channel is a singular path for media or control data etc.
