I wasn't clear that it was Asterisk that had to be restarted. At first from your description I assumed it was a firewall issue but now I'm not so sure. If asterisk has to be restarted and then it registers without you having to do anything else then ... well that doesn't make any sense. I think there is some other problem or you must be doing something else to get it working. Just reloading Asterisk without doing anything else should not fix anything that I can think of.
