David:

I **had** problems via IAX in the past when there was transcoding involved
between Provider to my Asterisk server. See if your provider (the ones
you are having issues with) are transmitting at G711, and your server is
allowing ONLY G711. If the audio is clear and without problems -- then the
issue is related to transcoding between two end points.

For my experiment sake, I would simply connect Zoiper directly with the
carrier(s) in question -- and run a call for an hour or so to investigate
quality or dropping issues.

That's my experience.

Cheers!
Reza.

Subject: [on-asterisk] Quality conundrum

Guys, this quality problem has eluded me for some time now. I have several
servers which have both PSTN & IAX accounts with VoIP providers and also
have IAX trunks between them. We have pfsense doing QoS (at two sites at
least) and I can validate calls are going through the purpose-built VoIP
queues - obviously most importantly for outbound.

Now here is the problem.

Server A (IAX) <-> Server B (IAX) - flawless

Server A/B (IAX) <-> VoIP carrier (IAX) - often have dropouts and many
complaints

At first I started to think about IAX and how it was being handled by ISP
routers etc. but if it weren't up to snuff it would negatively impact my
server-server communication too. These issues have been seen with two
different VoIP carriers.

Opinions/experiences?
