Hi Daniel,

I don't remember seeing a Hayes command for that, at least not a
standard one.  You can accomplish this though by using a device from
Radio Shack. I can't remember exactly what they call them, maybe a
privacy switch.  Basically, it prevents you from picking up while the
line is in use.  You won't get a "phone is off hook" message from the
modem but you should be able to make it tell you that it couldn't get
dialtone.  In that case, you'll be pretty sure that the line was in
use elsewhere and you just have to try again in a few minutes.
