Dean,

For sure you are going to want to come out to a meeting and talk to folks.
The fact is that some people prefer a GUI-based distro, and some prefer to
build the whole thing from scratch. Sparking a debate on the subject is
always fun, especially when there is beer and messy food involved.

How much flexibility are you wanting? The more flexible you want to be with
your solutions, the less a GUI will be able to meet the need. The learning
curve has to be considered as well; the GUIs deliver a somewhat easier
learning curve (but limit your flexibility). When you get good at Asterisk,
then a GUI can be frustrating because something you know how to do in the
dialplan may be difficult to put together with a GUI.

Aastra rules. I know I sound like a fanboy, but they really are great phones
for the price.

Snom phones need to be considered as well. I have never used them, but I
have never heard a bad thing, and have heard tons of good things. I would
use them without hesistation.

Polycom phones are great, but they do have some quality issues (hookswitch
on 430, PoE cable on 501), and their attitude towards the Asterisk community
is all wrong. Also, some people find configuration on them to be a pain.
