I noticed when dialing out through an analog line that the call setup time was nearly 8 seconds, and it was only after I picked up a handset outside the asterisk system that I clued in that after I've dialed on a SIP handset, the zaptel driver is sitting there re-dialing my digits at the speed of an 80 year old.
