This might be the wrong place for this question but as I have used both for some time I will take a stab at it.
I started out using sugar and then vtiger. I stuck with vtiger. for me version 5 of sugar turned me away, they removed things that I became very use to so after upgrading I could not use most of my mods anymore. An example would be the project task manager it was completely removed from the projects section for reasons that no one could figure out or explain. Upgrading also is no easy task, be ready for a workout, the wizard is completely broken and you may find yourself stuck or just messing up your system. Sugar does make up for some things by added the studio function which makes it easy to create your own mods. vtiger on the other hand, I found very easy to use, upgrade and mod, it does lack some of the finish that sugar has but that's not really a problem as I created my own themes and layouts. The community for both are very helpful so you may not be stuck on any major problems for too long if I was to put it on one line I would say; SugarCRM is to trixbox as vtigerCRM is to elastix. I hate to give this kind of answer but I will anyways, you really have to try them both, jump in and figure out for yourself what works for you.
