Most *Atom* based machines are those EEE note/net-book type laptops. So in Terry's case this may be a challenge.
However a USB Network adapter such as ( http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250587764069) may quite possibly be compatible with an Atom Netbook & Linux, however I've never experimented with a USB based Network Adapter - so can only say that in theory it should work.
