Agreed. I hate machines that call me, page me, or beep at me - if it's
not an emergency.
Another approach is Mail Call by Ward Mundy. Basically you can access
your pop/imap box via an extension. It isn't pretty, but it could be.....

It gives enough basic functionality to listen to message subject lines,
and read email.
I did some testing of this a while back. Be sure to look at the
Cepstral TTS engine. It was really the best, and was a good price too.
You could have the digital Allison read your email to you :-)
